Buffalo.com photo by Tom Kuenzi.
The Buffalo Zoo is holding its annual photo contest - I know that a lot of people in the program are talented animal photographers and may want to take a crack at this challenge. The grand prize is $50 and your choice of lemur.
OK the lemur part is not true. The deadline is Dec. 31, so you have some time to practice and pick out your top shots.
Anyhow, here are the rules and regs.

Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser in Lewiston on Wednesday
Buffalo.com photo by Sheila Denos.
Tomorrow - Wednesday, April 29 - there will be a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis at 6 PM at the Barton Hotel and Spa in Lewiston. The organizer of the event, Anne DeMunda, is a big Spotted enthusiast and would love to have a photographer out at this event.
If you have any interest and can make it out to Lewiston, Anne would be really grateful. She's expecting a crowd of approximately 200 people, so it should be a nice event on a beautiful spring evening in one of the real gems of Western New York.
Let me or Deanna know if you are interested!
Slinging papers in the Southtowns

A hearty huzzah to Buffalo.com manager Deanna Russo and program members Bill Parker, Tom Kuenzi, and Ben Tsujimoto for getting up early this morning and selling newspapers for Buffalo News Kids Day at Lakeview and Southwestern Blvd. in Hamburg, bringing in roughly $320 for Women's and Children's Hospital. They beat the rain and helped a good cause.

...and the winners are...(and other notes)
Buffalo.com photo by Darleen Stry.
...well, I will preface this by saying that the overall winner of the Spotted Spring photo contest was Darleen Stry's gallery, Spring is Here.
The next two runner-ups were Bill Parker's Signs of Spring in WNY gallery, and Tom Kuenzi's Sprung!! gallery. Both Bill and Tom's galleries received the same number of votes from our photo interns.
Now, I know I said that the top two vote-getters would get the gift certificates - but maybe it's the sun in the sky, or the fresh smell of cut grass in the air, or being too lazy to figure out a tie-breaker...but I think both these gentlemen deserve a gift certificate.
Therefore, all three of our contestants - Darleen, Bill, and Tom - will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant for their troubles. Thank you for the photos!
I am open to more contests, and ideas for contests, amongst our interns...please share your ideas with me and I will be happy to help promote anything which spurs interest in our Spotted internship.
- This leads me to another topic that I've been meaning to address.
I feel like I have been a bit of a grump with all of you in the program lately, and I do not mean to be. If you are reading this blog, odds are good that you are one of the people who are genuinely interested, active, and involved in the Buffalo.com internship program. You're not the people I want to be grumpy with. You're the people who I want to be happy!
Unfortunately, we have been losing interns lately, either to attrition or other commitments, and it's been more difficult to get people out to as many events.
Plus, due to some pretty major new projects that we will be rolling out this summer, we have been unable to do a lot of intern recruiting. We've also been unable to be as hands-on with the program as we have been in the past ("we" meaning Deanna and me). This will be worth it in the long run - there are some very cool things coming down the pipe in the near future - but it means that, for the long-term health of the site, things have suffered some in the short-term. I completely acknowledge this state of affairs.
I do want to say thank you to everyone who has stuck with the program - we haven't had a lot of new blood in the last 6 months, so the people out shooting or writing stories are people who have been committed to the program for more than their required term of service, that's for sure. Please hang around...good stuff is on the way. - In another blog post, Dan Ruggiero raised a great point - there has not been a lot of diversity on Spotted in the last year or so. Buffalo has a fairly diverse community, and a lot of our events really seem to focus on specific events in specific parts of the city or region.
I agree with Dan completely on this point, and this is something that we want to change this summer. I think this is very doable. That being said, I will reiterate my request from a week ago - to grow as photographers and writers, to grow as a Web site, for that matter, we need to step outside of our comfort zone from time to time. We need become more representative of Western New York. I have some ideas on how to make this happen, and I will take a lead in making sure this is, indeed, the case.

Variety is the spice of life
Buffalo.com photo by Sean Rudyk.
I had a talk with one of my managers yesterday and we agreed that there is some staleness settling into some of our content recently. Not that the work is stale - it's just that we seem to be going to the same places and covering the same things over and over again.
In the interest of jazzing things up a bit, I am challenging everyone to try picking some events that they may not normally cover - something that maybe you've never been too, or someplace you've wanted to visit but have not.
Also, we will not be booking events for some of the "same old, same old"-type places, unless you can pitch a fresh angle on it...so keep that in mind, too.
Here's to creativity!

Spotted photographers: "Spring has Sprung" photo contest
Buffalo.com photo by Ray Milkowski.
Hey photographers...want a chance to win one of two $25 gift certificates to a local restaurant?
Here's how:
I am putting an event into Spotted called Spring Has Sprung. Everyone has permission to post a gallery to this event.
Your gallery can consist of any type of spring shots - people, parks, pets - anything that says "spring" to you. You can shoot this wherever you think you'll find good spring-style shots.
Post your gallery of spring photos. On Friday, April 24, we will pick two winners based on YOUR VOTES - I will send out an email on that day with a poll embedded and you will pick the winners.
Each gallery will need to have a minimum of 40 photos and adhere to the 60-40 rule.
This contest is a bit of a test to see if there will be interest in this sort of thing in the future.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Good luck!

Do it for the kids!!!
As most of you are aware, Women and Children's Hospital is a gem in our community. After all, what other hospital in the area takes care of so many sick kids?
The Buffalo News' annual Kids Day supports the hospital - each year people line up on the street corners and intersections and sell papers, and all proceeds go to the hospital.
We would like to make the intersection of Route 20 and Lake View Road in Hamburg the Buffalo.com intersection! We need your help!
So far, out of 80 interns currently in the Buffalo.com program, one person has volunteered.
Come on people!!! Grab that coffee, set the alarm, and come help us sell papers for a few hours. It's not like it's going to be freezing cold, it's April 28!
Email Deanna at drusso@buffnews.com if you'd like to help!
Thanks!

PUSSY WILLOWS ON PARADE THROUGH HISTORIC DISTRICT
Buffalo, New York to Host World’s Only Dyngus Day Parade
For the third consecutive year, the streets of the Historical Polonia District will come alive with Polish pride during the Dyngus Day Buffalo Parade. The parade will take place, TODAY, April 13, 2009 at 5pm starting at Corpus Christ Church and ending at Polonia Hall on Paderewski Drive.
Marchers will passes numerous Dyngus Day parties along the parade route including those at St. Stanislaus Church, the Adam Mickiewicz Library, the Broadway Market, Central Terminal and family owned taverns. Over 75 units are scheduled to appear in the parade.
Bishop Edward Grosz, pastor of St. Stanislaus Parish, will bless the parade as it passes the “Mother Church of Polonia” at the corner of Peckham and Fillmore Avenue at 5:15p. Immediately after the blessing, the bells of the church will ring for the remainder of the parade.
“The Dyngus Day Parade has become an uniquely Buffalo tradition,” explained Parade Coordinator Bernadette Majewski. “This year, we are proud to welcome many of the performing polka bands and neighborhood churches as parade participants.”
A Polish-American tradition, Dyngus Day celebrates the end of the restrictive observance of Lent and the joy of Easter. Over the decades, Buffalo, New York has become the Dyngus Day Capital of the World attracting thousands of people from across the northeast United States.
Although celebrated in Buffalo’s Polonia neighborhood since the arrival of the first Poles in the 1870s, the city’s first modern Dyngus Day celebration was held 48 years ago by the Chopin’s Singing Society, a tradition that continues today. Dyngus Day Buffalo, the provider of marketing and organizational support to area celebrations was founded in 2005. Dyngus Day 2009 will take place on Monday, April 13th.

Writers: An interesting interview opportunity.
So apparently there is a guy who is going to live in a suspended box over Darien Lake for a few weeks, and he is - surprise, surprise - actively courting the media.
Buffalo.com writers - check out the story, and if you want to interview Mr. Galpin, please let me know and we'll make the arrangements.
I don't think there are a lot of photo opportunities involved in a situation in which a gentleman is living in a suspended box...but if there's some angle I'm missing, let me know, Spotted gang.
Some open stuff this weekend
Buffalo.com photo by Bill Parker.
Event sign-ups are a little slow this week for the second week in a row. That is completely understandable, given the fact that this is, for many, a solemn week followed by a holiday on the weekend, so no worries.
However, if anyone is interested, there are still some pretty decent events that are available for the taking. These events include:
TONIGHT
• Scotty Bowman Hockey Showcase. Two all-star hockey games between high school players from Buffalo and Rochester, as well as a “Battle of the Bands” between games. 6 PM, HSBC Arena, Buffalo.
Friday
• UB softball: v. Akron. Doubleheader begins at 1 PM. Nan Harvey Field, UB North Campus, Amherst.

…and we can always use more hands on deck for Dyngus Day, but we do have some people going out on Monday. More are always welcome!
If you’re interested in any of these things, please let me know.

Want to go? Dyngus Day 2009 events...
Buffalo.com photo by Ben Kirst.
We have permission from Dyngus Day organizers to send photographers and writers out to their events. You will need to have your Buffalo.com ID.
It would be great to get as many photographers and writers out to these events...Dyngus Day is like the Mardi Gras or St. Patrick's Day of the Buffalo Polish community. Chronicling these events is great for the site in terms of traffic, of course, but it also performs a unique service in the sense that we are capturing what the city will look like during the course of the 2009 Dyngus Day celebration. I think that's actually something kind of special, corny as that may sound.
If you want to cover any of these Dyngus Day events, please let me know. A full schedule is here.
Let me know!

A story suggestion for Buffalo.com writers
Buffalo.com photo by Ben Kirst.
The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site recently underwent some renovations, and it may be interesting to pursue a story about the improvements. Not to mention the fact that it's a pretty amazing piece of American history.
If you'd like to do a story on the Roosevelt House - it's located at 641 Delaware Ave. in Buffalo, by the way, which is on the edge of Allentown (it's on the block between Allen and North Sts.) - let me know and we can see what we can hook up.
Thanks to Ray Milkowski for the suggestion.
An important message to Buffalo.com photographers.
This message is going to all Buffalo.com interns, but is specifically geared towards our photo interns.
This morning, I have received three reports from local individuals and businesses complaining about the behavior of our photographers at events.
In addition, I have noticed a precipitous and continued decline in the quality of our photo galleries, and a severe lack of “smile for the camera” shots.
This can not stand.
Here are the rules of the Spotted program, which I discussed with you when you joined the program:
1.) You WILL NOT attend events as a Buffalo.com photographer unless you specifically clear it with Deanna or myself.
2.) You are responsible for adhering to the “60-40” rule of “smile for the camera” shots. If it does not appear that you made an honest effort to get to “60-40,” your gallery will be removed from the site.
3.) You will comport yourself in a professional manner when representing Buffalo.com. I know this is an unpaid internship, but when you attend events, you are not a guest – you are a member of the media. You must keep this distinction clear at all times.
From this point forward, I will remove photographers from the program who do not adhere to the rules listed above.
I do not wish to lose photographers, and I feel I have a good relationship with most of the people in the program. Unfortunately, I feel as though I have been taken advantage of in some cases, and this must end today.
I am angry and concerned – angry because I feel that the program is being damaged by the actions of some, and concerned that the Buffalo.com name is being sullied in the community.
I apologize to anyone who follows the rules of the program and receives this unpleasant email.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me immediately.

Something to think about
I'd recommend reading Deanna's blog today. We all like to have a good time, and I am willing to bet that many of us, myself certainly included, have gotten behind the wheel of a car when we were closer to the borderline than we should have been. Stuff like this makes us take a long, hard look at the possible impact of some of the decisions we make in life.
