Events 9/28/09

Hey all,

Great work by everyone this weekend. Our traffic is skyrocketing over the last couple days (I think it could have something to do with Bill Parker’s gallery from the Jills Calendar Release Party, but of course I’m just guessing here :))

I see that our photographers are using more appropriate titles and descriptions for photos and sets, thank you!

Our writers are also flexing those creative muscles…we’re throwing out the rules and writing from a more entertaining perspective!

I have a box of MyBuffalo.com cards on my desk – if you need another stack of cards to hand-out at events (this goes for writers and photographers) – let me know. I can either mail them out or you can pick them up at The News.

Are you linking your photo galleries, articles, and blogs on MyBuffalo.com to your social network pages (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.)? Are you making sure the organizers of the events also see your work? If no, why not? Brag about your great work!

I’m sure that most of you have received MyBuffalo.com t-shirts. If not, let me know and I’ll get one to you. I encourage everyone to wear them while taking photos and writing articles at events.

Are you active on MyBuffalo.com? Are you posting comments to other people’s photos, blogs (I’ve seen a few comments on my “Baby Chronicles” blog – thank you!), articles? Are you active on our message boards? If not, it’s time to step up. You are the “super-users” who give us great content, now’s the time to stay active - PARTICIPATE on the site!

When you are requesting events – I need three things from you: name of event, day/time, location. PLEASE do not reply back to this email, instead create a new one with Buffalo.com event request in the subject line.

Thanks again to all!

Deanna

9/21/09 Events

It’s football and Halloween season. That means we are in need of high school and college photos, Bills tailgate photographers and Haunted House and Fall Festival photos. As for Bills tailgate photos: there has been some questions over where to park and who will pay for parking when you take photos. Buffalo.com/The Buffalo News will cover the cost, and you could really park anywhere (local or Bills lot) to get great photos.

There are events that we're taking photos at where alcohol is being served. Please kindly ask the people to put the drink down or at least out of the shot. We don't want to encourage unsafe partying by posting inappropriate photos on the site.

Buffalo State’s homecoming is this weekend, and there are a few different events planned. All the info is below.

It’s a pretty extensive events list this week, let me know if you have questions.

Deanna (photos, videos): 1-?
Joe (photos): 2-3
Dave (photos): 4-6
Darleen (photos): call or email me to tell me when you’ll be getting there (There will be a +1 for you too)

All of you are on the media list. Report to the check in tent, which will be to the left of the grounds near the road. Call me if you have any problems finding it.

There will be a t-shirt toss during the afternoon. All are invited to join me as we throw our shirts to anxious members of the crowd.

Most of you have probably have received your t-shirts by now (Deandra, I’ll bring a small black one for you). Please wear them on Saturday!

Lots of smile for the camera shots please! If you can get them to hold up the cards and stickers, that will ensure them a better chance of being featured on the Buffalo.com homepage.

I will be available via my cell phone tomorrow, won’t be in the office Friday or Monday.
Thanks,
Deanna

Events 9/8/09

Let me begin with a THANK YOU to all for your hard work this weekend. We extensively covered the Wing Fest with three writers and five photographers, not to mention video too (the t-shirt toss was a blast). There were several other events too – Wallflowers, Great Big Sea, Toby Keith, Crue Fest, UB Fall Fest, high school football and Birds of Prey at Hawk Creek. WOW! Great work by all!!!! Check out the site to read the articles and see the tons of photos (search wing and you’ll see lots). We’ll be working on that video too.

This weekend, it doesn’t slow down too much. First, Thursday is the UB Block Party. We’ll have a tent set up to register people for MyBuffalo and give out free stuff from Best Buy. So far I have Joe and Kelly headed to the event along with myself. If you’d like to join us, let me know. Music is Art is Saturday, we have Dave, Joe, and Darleen who’ll be taking photos and Deandra who’ll be writing an article…I’ll also be there, let me know if you’d like to join us.

Curtain Up is Friday night. I can’t go (my father’s birthday), I need at least one photographer and writer to cover it. Let me know ASAP.

Want to hang out with the tailgaters in a couple weeks? We need a volunteer or two to take photos at the smaller lots for the first Bills home game.

You’ll notice there are several collegiate athletics events on the list. Our target demographic for MyBuffalo.com is 18-34. If we can cover as many as possible, these college games will be big for the site, since they get little media attention.

Please keep our “demo” in mind when you’re taking photos and interviewing people for the site. Young attractive people mean more page views. We were lacking some of these photos at the concerts this weekend.

There’s TONS of other stuff going on this week too.

Wing Fest

Before I begin...
  • We're still looking for a photographer interested in taking photos at tailgating parties tomorrow night at the Bills game.
  • Buffalo.com's very own Gabrielle is going to be the emcee of "Welcome Back College Students" night at Pure Nightclub on Friday night. Lizz has graciously agreed to be her photographer/videographer for the night. Everyone's welcome to join her for a great night. (I unfortunately will be sleeping, my party days are behind me)
  • I'm going to be out of the office on Friday, but I will be available via cell and email.
  • Ben's on vacation next week - email or call me with any questions.

OK...now onto the Wingfest. Let me start by saying these aren't assignments. Since you are all volunteers, I'm not allowed to assign. So consider these suggestions, to make sure that everyone knows what everyone else is doing.

Saturday crew:
Rule #1: Check in with me when you arrive. Call me on my cell - 390-2652 or 830-4010 and I'll meet up with you.

Rule #2: Keep all photos in good taste. This is going to be a messy event, so make sure everyone really wants their picture taken before you start snapping shots.

Rule #3: Writers, talk to me before the event. Call me on my cell phone and I can discuss the suggestions for your articles.

Rule #4: T-shirt toss: We're going to be tossing t-shirts into the crowd at certain times during the afternoon. I'm going to have a box full of shirts I will probably keep backstage for this purpose. That's just one reason why it's so important for you to check in with me when you arrive.

Rule #5: HAVE FUN AND ENJOY!

We're one of the sponsors, they're expecting us...so just identify yourself when you arrive. It's very important that you bring your .com ID with you (I'll have extras, Joe) wear your MyBuffalo.com t-shirt. Rachelle, Anthony, and Kathi I've mailed yours out today. Our Saturday crew can get them from me when they arrive. I'm sure you'll have questions, email me or call anytime.

Bills Tailgate Parties & T-Shirts

Hey all,

The Bills season is about to begin...and we are working to create a "Fan Zone" group at MyBuffalo.com for all your photos, blogs, message boards, etc.

We are in need of photographers who'd be willing to take photos at tailgate parties before home games. Let's get started with the preseason game this Thursday as the Bills take on the Lions.

If you haven't yet received your MyBuffalo.com t-shirt, please contact me ASAP with your choice in size and color. Want it mailed to you or want to pick it up at The News? Please specify that as well.

With all the events that are going on, everyone should be wearing our swag.

Thanks!

Deanna
