Buffalo.com Events List 4/5

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and enjoyed the heat wave! I’m looking forward to attending the Dyngus Day Parade for the first time tonight with Ben, Jeff, and Ray. Let me know if you have time to join us.
There are a lot of fun concerts, fundraisers and races in WNY this week.
Two big events that we would definitely like to send contributors to are on Sunday:

The 1st Annual Buffalo Chili Fest D'Arcy McGee's Irish Pub -- 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Proceeds will go to benefit the People Inc. Foundation. Musical entertainment will be provided by November 11th. Come and sample chili recipes from Western New York chefs and restaurants including The Soup Man, Denny's, Pizza Junction, D’Arcy McGees and many more who will compete for your vote for Western New York's Best Chili! Kids on the Block will entertain children and a magician and face-painting will add to the fun.

The Gift at the Pearl: A Benefit to Honor Fallen Buffalo Firefighters
All 5 floors of the Pearl Street Grill & Brewery – 2 p.m. – 10 p.m.
When Buffalo firefighters Jonathan Croom and Lieutenant Charles “Chip” McCarthy made the ultimate sacrifice in an East Side fire last August, they both left behind children with full lives ahead of them. In response to the personal and financial void Croom’s children now face, his friends have rallied the Buffalo music community to gather for The Gift at the Pearl. The event will feature more than a dozen local bands on four stages, along with a host of raffles and auctions, with 100% of the proceeds going to a trust fund for Croom’s children.

Buddy Guy with Special Guest Tom Hambridge UB Center for the Arts -- 8:00 p.m.
Any discussion of Buddy Guy invariably involves a recitation of his colossal musical resume and hard-earned accolades. He’s a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a chief guitar influence to rock titans like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, and Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to that city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Buddy has received five Grammy Awards, 23 W.C. Handy Blues Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard Magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts.Yet despite this long list of achievements, Buddy Guy and his music remain as vital as ever.

An evening with Lisa Ling, special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall – 7 p.m.
Lisa Ling regularly files dispatches for The Oprah Winfrey Show as a special correspondent, and is a contributor to CNN's critically acclaimed series, Planet in Peril. She has also been a correspondent for National Geographic Explorer since December 2002, and is also well known for her stint sharing her no-holds-barred opinions on current events and everyday issues as a co-host of ABC’s hit daytime talk show, The View.

tUnE-yArDs with Special Guest Xiu Xiu The Mohawk Place – 8 p.m.
Both of these experimental rock bands from California have an interesting blend of percussion and experimental structures with lush hooks and diverging lyrical styles.

Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime The Town Ballroom -- Doors open at 7:00
Scotty Don’t will open the show.
Badfish is a tribute band dedicated to playing the music of Sublime. The group is named after a song appearing on the album 40 Oz. to Freedom. In 2008, the band was nominated for Best Tribute Act in the Boston Music Awards.The group played 152 shows across the United States in 2006, selling just under 100,000 tickets and grossing $1.4 million in sales. Members of the group also play in a non-tribute act called Scotty Don't, which sometimes acts as the opener at Badfish shows.

Suzanne Vega Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall – 8 p.m.
Suzanne Vega is a singer/songwriter of rare poetic genius. Her profound insight into the basics of human existence has earned her followers of all ages and walks of life. From her hits “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner” to her latest album Beauty & Crime, her work is immediately recognizable, as utterly distinct and thoughtful, and as creative and musical now, as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 20 years ago.

Sleigh Bells The Mohawk Place – 9 p.m
Sleigh Bells is an American noise pop music duo. The group signed to M.I.A.'s record label N.E.E.T. and will release their debut album, Treats, on May 11th.

N’Dias (The Mix) featuring Alassane Sarr (a master percussionist from Senegal) Kleinhans Music Hall -- 8 p.m.
The music of N’Dias is rooted in the African tradition and through its performances the band strives to build awareness for the beauty and excitement of West African dance and drumming. Though their art is based on tradition, they cover a broad range of musical styles, from ancient to contemporary. The 12-member group includes numerous percussionists, electric guitars and bass, and dancers who deliver engaging high-energy performances from beginning to end.

The Glengarry Bhoys The Historic Riviera Theatre -- 8 p.m.
The Glengarry Bhoys, founded in 1998, is a Celtic fusion band blending traditional Scottish and Irish music with modern Celtic and contemporary sounds.

Saturday

Haiti Relief 5K Run/1-Mile Walk Delaware Park, Ring Road -- 9:30 a.m.

Memorial Miles 5K Run/ 1 Mile Walk Hilbert Campus and surrounding neighborhood
10 a.m.
Hilbert is proud to host "Memorial Miles, " a certified course through Hilbert College and the surrounding neighborhood that benefits student scholarships. The race concludes with a post-race BBQ, including music, children’s play area, 50/50 raffle and gift basket auction.

“CSI Buffalo” Downtown Buffalo & Erie County Public Library – 2 p.m.
John P. Simich, Ph.D., Laboratory Director of the Erie County Central Police Services Forensic Laboratory, will present a program called “CSI Buffalo” on the fascinating world of state-of-the-art forensic science. His presentation will detail the use of modern forensic techniques in local cases and how they might have been used to assist in the notorious Thayer Brothers murder case in 1825. Simich oversees the day-to-day operations of the Erie County Forensic Laboratory and is the DNA Technical Leader for the Forensic DNA Section which he established in 1993. He holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology from the Roswell Park Division of the University at Buffalo and teaches Forensic Science at both University at Buffalo and Canisius College.

27th Annual International Cultural Fiesta to benefit Haiti
Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall— 6:00- 8:00 p.m.
An evening of international food and performances, including a cultural fashion show, is being hosted by the Buffalo State College International Student Organization. Performances will include dance, voice and instrumentals representing a range of cultures, including Middle Eastern, Asian, Irish, Polish, Native American, Malaysian, African American, Indian and Haitian. Students from Buffalo State and the community will perform.

UB and Buffalo Drum Outlet present the Spectacle of Sound Jazz Festival The Tralf Music Hall -- 6:30 p.m.
The show will feature UB’s Pep Band and local high school jazz ensembles from Mount St. Mary Academy, Tonawanda High School, St. Francis High School, Akron High School and Hutch Tech.

Daryl Stuermer: Genesis Rewired Seneca Niagara Casino— 8 p.m.
Virtuoso lead guitarist Daryl Stuermer of the super-group Genesis and Phil Collins has been touring the world to sold-out crowds since 1978, creating the signature guitar sound of the Phil Collins mega hits “In the Air Tonight” and “Easy Lover.” As co-writer of the Phil Collins 1989 Grammy Award Winning, Billboard No. 4 single “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven,” Stuermer continues to write music for his eight solo albums of original music and cover his favorite Genesis vocals and instrumentals along the way. His new band, Daryl Stuermer-Genesis Rewired, is an exciting fusion of Stuermer’s unique Genesis renditions, creating an unforgettable evening that reinvents the Genesis experience.

This is a benefit for Autistic Children and will feature entertainment by Gregg Sansone, The Stone House Band, and Soundwave DJ's.

Justin Nimmo The Riviera Theatre – 2:00 pm
North Tonawanda native Justin Nimmo began organ studies at 5 and at 13 played theatre organ at the Riviera Theatre. At 16, he became a house organist and regularly played overtures and other programs. Nimmo currently reside in Indianapolis, is a member of Central Indiana Chapter of ATOS, perf-orming for Chapter events. Employed by Carlton Smith Theatre Pipe Organ Restorations since 2004, he works on organ installation and servicing. Nimmo is a 2005 and 2006 recipient of ATOS scholarships, and studied with renowned theatre organ teacher, John Ferguson.
