Events 11/30/09

Hey all,

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday.

It’s time to get back to the grind.

College students: please let me know when your semester ends so we can make sure that your internship requirements are complete and the proper paperwork is turned in to achieve school credit.

Hopefully all photographers are using the multi-photo uploader to upload their photos to MyBuffalo. This should be standard procedure by now. After the photos are uploaded, make sure each photo is included in a set by accessing MyBuffalo. If you have any questions about this tool, feel free to contact me.

We’re still encountering issues with titles and descriptions. Each photo must have one. Here’s an ideal title and description:
Title: Fall Ball AP Tour At Town Ballroom

Events 11/16/09

Response from all you contributors this past weekend was overwhelming! I’d love to keep the momentum going this week.

Remember if you’re trying to upload your photos using the bulk uploader and are encountering problems I need to know about them in detail, that way we can work out any bumps in the road for other contributors. Your job is not done once you upload your photos, they must go in a set. Here’s an example of one I created using photos I took at the Extreme Home Makeover on Saturday.

Titles and descriptions are getting better, but I still need you all to specify where the photo was taken in the title of both your photo and set.

There are a few events on this list where we have a photographer but no writer yet – I need to know if you’re interested asap so I can get approval for both of you.

Sets tool has arrived

Hey all,

The sets tool on MyBuffalo.com has arrived - for all you Spotted veterans a set is equivalent to a gallery.

You can access sets by going to the MyBuffalo drop down menu.

When you cover an event, all your photos should go in a set.

We are working hard to incorporate the sets feature into the multi-photo uploader (http://account.mybuffalo.com/upload/radApplet.php), but for now please use the uploader to get them on the site then put your photos into a set individually.

If you have any questions, feel free to email or call.

Events 11/9/09

Hi all,

Hope everyone’s enjoying the very mild weather we’re experiencing. November in Buffalo? Extreme Makeover picked a great week to bring their cameras to town.

I have to begin on a very serious note: I can’t stress this enough. Titles and descriptions on photos taken at all events are so important. Too many times people are posting photos with IMG and a number, and this will not be able to help people as they’re searching their photos. Many of these have been posted in the last month. Same thing goes for indescript titles like “Time-Out” or “Net Down”. A better title is “Time Out at the BSC Hockey Game”.

Along with titles and descriptions – PLEASE make sure all your photos are in sets, again this will mean problems for people when they try to search for their photos.

If you’re experiencing any issues with the multi-media uploader, or need a link to it please let me know.

We’ve received a special request to cover a BSC Sorority event on Sunday, please let me know if you’re interested (all the info is below).

When you request events, please don’t reply to this email, simply send me a separate email with information on the event you’re requesting.

Thank you!

Tags, tags, tags & sets, sets, sets

I can not stress enough the importance of tagging your media in MyBuffalo.com.

Why tag?

Items are easily found when people are searching for them on MyBuffalo.com

The tag cloud on MyBuffalo.com might just show your tags!

How do I tag?

Think of the keywords that are associated with your media. For example if it's a photo gallery on a Halloween costume contest you should tag with: halloween, costume, the location where it took place, specific costumes, etc. etc. etc.. The more tags, the easily your photos can be found.

Always separate the words with a space, not a comma.

ALWAYS upload your photos into a set. If you are taking photos of people at a specific event and passing out cards, the only way for them to find all the photos is to upload them into a set. This is a very easy process that is accessible on the photo upload page.

As always if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Events 10/26/09

Here we are Halloween week – one of the biggest weeks of the year for web traffic on Buffalo.com! I’m hoping many of you will volunteer for one of the many events.

The events list is a little bit different this time around. I’ve listed Haunted Houses, Halloween Parties, then everything else going on in WNY, some holiday-related some not.

We were requested to cover the Darwin Martin House Fundraiser on October 29. See the list for more information.

Remember those “Smile for the Camera” shots and remember to incorporate your photo titles with your event descriptions!

Keep in mind – when you request an event don’t reply to this email – just send me another email with all the details, and I’ll do all the legwork.

The Rack ‘em Up contest is officially over, which means all your Buffalo.com cards are now outdated. I’m working on getting new ones, and will keep you posted. Use the old ones until the new ones come in.

Thank you!

Events 10/19/09

Hey all,

• You’ll notice that the events list this week is smaller than usual. Why? Because our target audience is 18-34 and some of the events going on this week don’t fit that demo. If you know of events that I left out that would be perfect for our 18-34 target demo, please let me know.

• With that same thought in mind, you’ll notice shows on this list that take place at Mohawk Place, XTreme Wheels, etc. if the performer/bands doesn’t sound familiar, do a google search and head over to the MySpace page. We’d like to target the local music scene and up-and-coming bands…and these are ways to do it.

• Halloween is right around the corner – it’s traditionally a HUGE time for the site. Lots of people come to our site to see photos of the unique and unusual costumes. If you know of local bars/clubs hosting costume events (other than what’s listed here), fill me in and we’ll get you in the door. We still haven’t found a writer or photographer volunteer to check out the Haunted Catacombs in Cheektowaga or Fright Fest at Darien Lake…what, are you scared?

• College interns, are on-campus events slow? Take a community event this week and take photos or write an article about something off campus!

• Photographers: is everyone writing a description and appropriate title for your photos? The titles have improved, but many photos are being uploaded without proper descriptions. The sets/multi-photo uploader tool is coming VERY SOON.

• Writers: are you tagging your stories? Keep in mind that keywords are important when it comes to search.

• Also, if you know of a big show/concert, etc. that is coming up in the next month and you want to cover it, let me know that info as well. I reviewed AC/DC last night. No show - no matter how big or small - is out of question.

Thanks!
