Congratulations are in order

Buffalo.com photo by Matt Brown.

Congratulations to Spotted photographer Erica Morano, who won second place in the Aquarium of Niagara's "Penguin Days Amateur Photography" photo contest.

Erica is actually the daughter of Spotted photographer Eric Malinowski. Good photography runs in the family! Erica and Eric have both done great things in the Spotted program.

Well done, Erica! We at Buffalo.com are very proud of your accomplishment and we are pleased to have you in the program.

Smile for the Camera!, Part II

Buffalo.com photo by Ray Milkowski.

Spotted photographers:

I just wanted to remind all of you that we need "smile for the camera" shots in your galleries.

"But why?" you ask.

"Here's why," I reply. "First, it is important that people at your event know that you are there. We want them to come back to the Spotted site to see their photos. Second, it helps get the Buffalo.com name out there, which also brings people back to the site. Third, when people don't go to an event, they love to see the photos of the people who were there - I can show you literally hundreds of examples of this at our Spotted site. Fourth, when some photographers start to skimp on their 'smile for the camera' shots, then almost invariably the other photographers start to skimp on theirs, too, whether it is consciously or unconsciously. And then we've got a real problem."

"I understand," you say. "All of those reasons make sense. But I don't always like to talk to strangers. Sometimes I feel like I get good photos without the 'smile for the camera' shots. And some of the events I've been too haven't had a ton of people."

"I get it," I tell you. "And everything you're saying is logical. Look, if you go to an event and there are 50 people there, it may be tough to get a lot of SFTC shots - I'm going to say 'SFTC' now, because I am sick of saying 'smile for the camera.' And even if you get shots of everyone in the room, that may only come out to 15 or 20 SFTC shots. And you may want to post a lot of photos, so the percentage doesn't work out to 60-40, which is what we're looking for. My advice in those situations, to be honest, is to post less photos in your gallery.

"I am not questioning the quality of your non-SFTC shots, by the way. Many of them are very interesting. But the bottom line is this - people are going to visit the site and stay at the site to see SFTC photos. They drive page views, site visits, and time spent at the site. Those are numbers that make Spotted money. And if Spotted doesn't make money, there will be no Spotted. So when we get away from our SFTC shots, it may not seem like a big deal now, but it will be a huge deal in the future. I hope this doesn't sound too crass, but at the end of the day, this is still a business venture.

"And finally," I say, gasping for air, "I know that it can be a little awkward asking strangers for photos sometimes. That, however, is part of the gig with Spotted. I can say, that after shooting over 200 Spotted events myself, that it gets easier as you go along. Some nights you go to an event and really don't feel like talking to people. I have felt this way, too. But I find that as I start talking, and get into the event, it gets easier and it starts to be a fun challenge, and I meet interesting people mand make good connections, and I end up with a much better gallery than I would have had otherwise."

"That's reasonable," you say. "I will try to get some more of those SFTC shots."

"I would appreciate that."

"No problem."

"Now," I say, loading my pistol. "Let's go take care of those bank robbers."

Duty free duty

On Wednesday, April 1 at 10 AM, Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul and Ron Reinas of the Peace Bridge Authority will be speaking about Enhanced Drivers’ Licenses at the Peace Bridge Duty Free Shop. We have a great business relationship with the Duty Free stores and they are interested in some Buffalo.com coverage of the event, so I am looking for a photographer and a writer who would be interested in going to this media event.

I know what you’re thinking – what a barn-burner this will be, right? Well, to sweeten the pot a bit, I can offer anyone who volunteers some special discounts at the Duty Free store…so keep that in mind.

Anyhow, same drill as always…first come, first serve…

PS. I hope everyone got the BUG coupons for the Duty Free store that I sent out earlier this week…if your spam filter ate them, let me know, and I will postally mail them to you.

It's always football season in Buffalo (or Amherst as the case may be)

Buffalo.com photo by Don Nieman.

The University at Buffalo men's football team is opening its spring practices to the media. If you'd like to get an early look at the 2009 Bulls, this is your opportunity.

The practices will take place on:

  • Saturday, March 28 (1:30 - 2:45 PM)
  • Saturday, April 4 (3:45 - 5 PM)
  • Saturday, April 11 (1:30 - 2:45 PM)
  • Saturday, April 18 (Blue-White scrimmage - 2:30 PM)
Players and coaches will be available for interviews after the practices, as well.

These practices will be held at UB Stadium on the university's north campus in Amherst. In case of inclement weather, the practices will be moved to the Buffalo Bills Fieldhouse in Orchard Park.

If any photographers or reporters are interested - let me know. From my personal standpoint, I would think that the scrimmage would be the most interesting event, but you're welcome to pick up any of these practices.

A good event and networking opportunity (and I bet the food is good, too)

Here's a Thursday night event that will offer a writer or photographer a chance to mingle with some of the top realtors in Western New York, and have an opportunity to see some interesting new products unveiled...oh, and I bet the hors d'oeuvres are delightful. The folks in our HomeFinder department would be absolutely tickled if we had any volunteers for this event, and I know that the event organizers would love it, too...so if you are interested...please let me know.

Thanks again!

Something for next Monday

You may have noticed that we rarely have events scheduled for Mondays...that's because we make the events list on a Monday, and it would be cutting things a little close to try to book an event for 7 PM if we get a sign-up at 4:15 PM. We're only human! I suppose we could add a note for the upcoming Monday events with the weekly list, or simply send out an email or post to this blog sometime during the previous week, but THAT'S NOT HOW WE DO THINGS. To paraphrase Homer Simpson, there is a right way, a wrong way, and our way - and our way involves a little less work on our end.

But really, how often are there big, unclaimed events on a Monday? Are we really losing sleep because we have yet to cover "Free Mohawk Monday" at Mohawk Place? No offense to Free Mohawk Monday, I am sure it is a quality event, but...you get the picture.

Anyhow, this coming Monday, there is actually a reasonably interesting event you may like to cover, either journalistically or photographically...if so, let me know. Looks like there is free pastry involved, too, which is always nice.

The event requests keep rolling in...

Buffalo.com photo by Brandi Callahan.

Here's another one, and it's a pretty good one...and it's a great cause. We had a photographer at this event last year, and I would love to get a photographer out to this one, and a writer if possible, too.

Good afternoon Ben – I hope this finds you well…

I wanted to give enough time for consideration to once again send a spotted in wny crew out to our Reach For the Stars creative black tie gala (a crew was able to join us last year)
.

The event is Saturday, April 4th at the Seneca Niagara Casino – we will sell out soon and have over 900 guests in attendance – each guest is encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Hollywood celebrity – details are on our website at www.wny.wish.org Please let me know your thoughts – thanks!!

Ronn Tritto

Executive Director
Make-A-Wish Foundation

I should add a note here - when it comes to black tie galas, our writers and photographers don't need to wear tuxedos and evening gowns (although if you want to, feel free). Media at these events are expected to dress appropriately - a tie and a jacket for the gents, a suit or a nice skirt for the ladies.

But please don't feel like you will be the uncouth guest if you're not in formal wear - and this is coming from a guy who is OCD enough about clothes to turn around on the way to work and change his socks because they don't "feel" right - the folks in attendance know the deal, and they are excited to have you there taking their photos or telling their stories.

Local bands request coverage on April 2

Photo from MySpace.

Got a phone call from a nice young man named Ryan Najuch yesterday. His band, Kindergarten Crush, will be performing at Mohawk Place, 47 E. Mohawk St., Buffalo, on Thursday, April 2 at 8 PM. Other bands on the bill will include The Breathing Tree, Awaken North Wind! (supposedly the next big thing out of Erie, Pa.) and Cry of the Union Forever.

You can follow all of the links to check out the bands on MySpace - they sound pretty good.

If you are interested in photos or a story, let me know!

Yet another late addition

...and YourHub's own sportswriter extraordinaire David Jarka will be the ref for some of this hardcore wrestling extravaganza, so let me know if you are interested. Oh, and if someone hits Dave with a chair, do NOT get involved...could be dangerous.

...two hours later, and the events list is already out of date

Buffalo.com by Ray Milkowski.

Just received this one...if you are interested, let me know.

St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Names Dr. (“Doc”) Charles W. Breem Man of the Year!

(Buffalo, NY—March 23, 2009). The St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Alumni Association is pleased to announce that Dr. Charles W. Breem Jr. has been chosen as its 2009 Man of the Year in recognition of his outstanding service to St. Joe’s.

Presentation of the award will take place during the St. Joe’s Father-Son Mass and Breakfast on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in the gymnasium of
St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, located at 845 Kenmore Avenue.

The St. Joe’s Man of the Year honor is given annually to a person who has demonstrated a commitment to St. Joe’s over the years, and their involvement must be indicative of service to the school and to the larger St. Joe’s community.

A St. Joe’s faculty member for 39 years, Dr. Breem has taught thousands of students in almost every science course offered at the school during this time. Affectionately known simply as “Doc” around the St. Joe’s campus, many of his pupils have proceeded to earn Ph.D.’s and M.D.’s. For his numerous teaching and moderating efforts, Dr. Breem was recognized by “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” as one of the top teachers of the 20th century.

Dr. Breem graduated from Houghton College (Allegany County) with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Chemistry and German and Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Mathematics. He then attended the State University of New York at Buffalo where he obtained a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics. He conducted post-doctoral research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Dr. Breem’s professional career has included such prominent programs as the Apollo Moon Project. He has also developed a polymer binding energy equation and has done cancer molecular studies. He is 40-year member of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society.

Presently teaching Physics and Electronics at St. Joe’s, Dr. Breem has been active in promoting students’ involvement in scientific research. Under his direction, the first student engineering team to participate in the Mars Rover Project developed a protocol to extend the life of the Rover, an achievement for which they were awarded the NASA Space Medal. Another one of Dr. Breem’s student teams were recognized with the Farber Award for contributing to the discovery of new anti-cancer drugs.

Also a committed community activist, Dr. Breem helped found one of Buffalo’s first and oldest Block Clubs and has served as its president for 20 years. His continuing efforts to improve the lives of Buffalo citizens have been recognized by the Mayor, the Common Council, and the State Legislature.

Dr. Breem and his wife, Lois, reside in Buffalo. His hobbies include tending to his exquisite rose garden and home remodeling.

Great, great stuff

Spotted
photographers:

You knocked it out of the park.

I am blown away by the number and the quality of galleries that were posted this weekend. I've received compliments from a number of my contacts. And, frankly, I don't think there's any argument that we have the most comprehensive photocoverage of both the St. Patrick's Day parade and other St. Patty's events throughout WNY of any media outlet in Western New York - easily.

I'm really proud of what I see at the site. Thanks, everyone.

UPDATE: The photo above is by Spotted photographer Bill Parker...or should I say 2008 Spotted Photographer of the Year Bill Parker. Due to either my limited tech skills or a bug in Blogger, my photo caption kept turning into a highlighted link because the first word in the story is a link...didn't mean to snub you, Bill!

3-17 to 3-22 events list

Squeaky Wheel: Deadline extended for media artists (like you)

Buffalo.com photo by Lorraine Simon.

Hey folks - if you are interested in being part of a new Squeaky Wheel project, you have some additional time to get involved...read below.

(I should add that Squeaky Wheel is a very cool grassroots media organization in Buffalo that has posted videos to Spotted, so I am not completely unbiased here...but this might be an interesting step for any media artists in the programs. And aren't we all, in a way, media artists?)

BEYOND/IN WESTERN NEW YORK 2010 : Alternating Currents

NEW EXTENDED DEADLINE: March 31st, 2009 (by midnight!)

Due to the fact that this is the first year we are enabling online submissions and uploading of materials for Beyond/In Western New York, the curatorial team has agreed that we will extend the deadline by two weeks, to ensure that everyone intending to apply can apply.

The call for submissions is open to emerging and established artists and art collectives in Western and Central New York, Southern Ontario, Northeastern Ohio, and Northwestern Pennsylvania. Artists working in all media – film, installation, multimedia, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, performance, and video – are encouraged to submit work.

For submission application and information, please visit www.beyondinwny.org.

Thanks, everyone

Buffalo.com photo by Ben Kirst.

I just wanted to say thank-you to everyone who volunteered to get out to the St. Patrick's Day parade on Sunday for Buffalo.com. We were a little worried earlier this week that we would not have an adequate presence at this major annual event - but now, that is certainly no longer a concern - we should have total coverage of this festive day. I'll be out there shooting photos and video myself, so if you see me, say hi - whether you're doing anything for Buffalo.com or not. Complementary beers are graciously accepted!

I should add, by the way, that we've been seeing some stellar work from photographers and writers in recent weeks, and I wanted to say "thank-you" all of you for your interest and efforts. If you're reading this blog, odds are good that this is directed right at you - you're one of the people who are very involved in the program, one of the people who have helped make Spotted one of the biggest Web successes in Western New York and YourHub one of the most ground-breaking activities in online news market. We couldn't have done it without you.

Anyhow, slainte, and have a great weekend. Stay safe, and have a blast!

An event for Monday

Buffalo.com photo by Ben Kirst.

Thought someone might be interested in this event:

We invite you to attend the official opening of Hispanics United of Buffalo's Pre-Employment Center. The opening will take place on Monday, March 16 from 3:30 PM to 5 PM at 251 Virginia Street located across from our main building. You will have an opportunity to meet our staff and learn more about the Pre Employment Center and how it can benefit your clients, employees, customers and neighbors...

This event may not seem as sexy as the concerts and parties and other stuff that our writers and photographers usually attend, but I can guarantee you that the people behind this particular project would be really grateful for some coverage. It's about two hours out of your day - if you can make it, it would mean a lot to a number of people trying to make life better in Buffalo.

Just something to thnk about.

Speaking of Irish stuff...there's a big parade on Sunday

Buffalo.com photo by Darleen Stry

Hey, we have a ton of sign-ups for events this week - thank you, everyone.

I did want to mention, though, that we have nary a writer or photographer signed up for the St. Patrick's Day parade in Buffalo on Sunday. This is one of the biggest events of the year in the city, and I would be thoroughly pleased to send as many volunteers as possible to this massive, 2-mile long party featuring thousands and thousands of revelers.

Shoot me an email or give me a call if you're interested!

A three-way race!

Buffalo.com photo by Mary Mahoney.

Our photo interns Sean Rudyk, Mary Mahoney, and Marc Wierzbowski all braved the rain and took photos at the Buffalo Shamrock Run this past Saturday. Each of them posted a nice gallery - lots of good stuff from one of the biggest races of the year in the city.

What I found quite interesting was the page view numbers. Check this out - these are current as of Wednesday at 4:11 PM.

Marc's gallery: 8,119 page views
Sean's gallery: 8,626 page views
Mary's gallery: 8,098 page views

Sean's ahead by a nose! Not that it's a competition, of course. It's just kind of weird that three galleries from the same event would have such similar page views. These strong numbers speak to the great efforts of our three photographers at the race on Saturday. Marc, Sean, Mary - thank you.

And while we're talking about the Celtic scene here in Buffalo...Darleen Stry posted a nice gallery from St. Bernadette's Irish Night in Hamburg, and Tom Parry showed some flash with his Gaelic Storm gallery (I don't know what I'm into awful puns lately). We have the Irish flu at Buffalo.com!

Don't get scammed!

Buffalo.com photo by Bill Parker.

Bad news...I received this email from one of the members of our internship program today. It's a good reminder that you need to be careful dealing with buyers and sellers online...

I just wanted to send a word of warning to anybody who is selling any higher end electronics on Craigslist.com I posted my Canon 40D and Canon lens package on Craigs list for $850.

I was contacted by a gentleman who asked if I would mind shipping the item to his son overseas. I of course said no. I would just need $ for postage. He said he would include $150 to ship and package it as a gift. When I accepted the offer he asked for my PayPal account address. Then when I gave him my address a few hours later I received two e-mails. One is the one below and the other one giving me the ship to address in Nigeria and complete financial details of the transaction. However it had a notification that payment would be held until a confirmation was received that the item had been shipped and a tracking number was received. That was to protect their client from being scammed. I checked my PayPal account and to my dismay there was no $ in it. I called PayPal and they confirmed my intuition – the whole thing was a scam. She said that many people without much experience selling etc with PayPal often ship and then receive no $. She asked if the country was Nigeria and when I confirmed she said that was a well known scam on Craigs list.

Needless to say I still have my Canon 40D and 18-55mm Canon lens for sale for $850 so if you know anybody looking for one let me know.

And if someone is interested in buying that camera, let me (Ben) know and I'll put you in touch with the intern who wrote this.

The Value of Interning, Part I

Buffalo.com photo by Chris Brown.

Deanna found this article and thought it might be interesting to you...here's a good excerpt:

If you can afford it, intern, even it isn’t paid (most aren’t anyways). This shows dedication, not to mention you are gaining experience and getting valuable additions for your resume while your searching for a job as well as expanding your network and contacts. Eventually, this economy will turn around and if you are sticking it out with a company, when they start to grow and expand again, you’re already versed with their operations, structure and culture. They would certainly prefer to hire someone who already “knows the ropes.”
